A Weekend Rooted in Art, Nature & Community

This past weekend, our community came together for two inspiring experiences that beautifully reflected our commitment to creativity, sustainability, and connection.

At Palmer Park’s Art in the Trees festival, our youth art program participants stepped into a world of wonder as they journeyed through the forest in search of their Aziza Fairy Doors. What began as a simple walk became an imaginative adventure. Along the way, students encountered artwork by local Detroit artists, reminding them that creativity can live anywhere—even nestled among the trees.

Participants also had the opportunity to decorate mini birdhouses and butterflies, hands-on activities that invited them to think about the role of art in caring for and coexisting with the natural world. These small creations carried big ideas—about habitat, beauty, and our shared responsibility to the environment.

Back at the studio, we welcomed community members for a dynamic sustainability workshop led by Gena Green of gcullebrand. In this session, participants transformed everyday denim jackets into one-of-a-kind wearable art pieces. Through stitching, embellishing, and personal storytelling, each jacket became an expression of identity, while also highlighting the power of upcycling as a creative and sustainable practice.

Across both experiences, one thing was clear: when art, nature, and community come together, something meaningful takes root. From the curiosity of our young explorers to the creative energy of our workshop participants, the weekend was a reminder that learning happens everywhere—and that creativity has the power to connect us more deeply to ourselves, each other, and the world around us.
We’re grateful to everyone who joined us and look forward to continuing this journey together.
